The Workbench

Draw it before I do.

Set the size, roof, cladding, doors and windows of a shed, garden room or log store. Watch the drawing and the price change as you go, drop it into a photo of your own garden, then send me the job ticket.

Why it lasts

Every ring is a year.

Tanalised timber is pressure-treated, so the protection goes right through to the core. That green tinge on new wood? That's it working. Atlantic rain, salt on the wind; it takes both, winter after winter.

The maker

James Turpin

It started in lockdown with a table for our own garden. People kept asking who'd made it. Six years on, I'm still the only one making anything here.

I trained in product design and I come from a family of woodworkers. So everything starts as a pencil drawing on the bench. Then I build it by hand, in heavy tanalised timber, and bring it to your garden myself.

No production line. No middlemen. The person who quotes your job is the person who builds it.

Path of a piece

Made to order is simple. It just means the thing you get was made for you. This is how it goes.

  1. Your idea

Call, email or send the form. A photo or a rough sketch helps, but a few sentences is plenty. It's a conversation, not a form-filling exercise.

  2. The drawing

I draw it up properly and send you an honest, itemised price. No obligation and no pressure.

  3. The build

Once you're happy, I build it by hand in the workshop in Lostwithiel. Heavy-duty tanalised timber, every joint done by me.

  4. Delivery

I bring it across Cornwall and set it up in place. It arrives ready to use, not flat-packed in your hallway.

  5. The decades after

I'll show you how to keep it at its best. And I'm on the end of the phone if you ever need me.
